Case Files – Devil's Hideout

Folklore & Legends

Will-o’-the-Wisp: Marsh Lights Between Chemistry and Folklore

Will-o’-the-wisp is a folklore category attached to real and misperceived lights, not one proven mechanism. New chemistry offers a plausible methane-ignition route while direct modern field measurements remain limited.

uncertainpublicEuropean wetlands; representative East Anglia fen pinRecorded for centuries; modern chemical mechanisms under active study

Disappearances & Unresolved Identities

Percy Fawcett: The Last Letter From the Search for Z

The expedition disappeared after leaving Dead Horse Camp, most plausibly through accident, illness, starvation or violence. Archaeology validates complex pre-Columbian Amazon settlements, not Fawcett’s particular Z or any theory of his fate.

uncertainpublicUpper Xingu region, Mato Grosso; representative Dead Horse Camp area pinFinal documented letter 29 May 1925; later searches through the twentieth century

Disappearances & Unresolved Identities

Amelia Earhart’s Last Flight: Radio, Fuel and an Empty Search

The surviving radio and search record most directly supports fuel exhaustion and a sea crash near Howland. Castaway and capture theories remain possible narratives but lack confirmed physical evidence linking Earhart to another location.

uncertainpublicHowland Island vicinity; intended destination and representative search-area pin2 July 1937; official search through 18 July

Disappearances & Unresolved Identities

The Somerton Man: From “Tamám Shud” to Carl Webb

DNA from hairs embedded in the death mask produced a strong genealogical identification announced in 2022. South Australian authorities have continued their own review, so identity confidence should not be confused with an official cause-of-death finding.

uncertainpublicSomerton Beach, AdelaideBody found 1 December 1948; identification announced July 2022

Scientific Anomalies & Natural Phenomena

Blood Falls: The Iron-Rich Brine Beneath Taylor Glacier

Blood Falls is visually uncanny but scientifically explained. Its colour comes from iron oxidation, while its isolated salty ecosystem remains valuable for studying life beneath ice.

explainedpublicTaylor Glacier, McMurdo Dry ValleysObserved in 1911; modern geochemical and geophysical study ongoing

Scientific Anomalies & Natural Phenomena

Fast Radio Bursts: Milliseconds From Distant Galaxies

FRBs are established astrophysical events, not unexplained transmissions in the colloquial sense. Magnetars can produce them, while the population’s diversity and emission physics remain active research questions.

explainedpublicCHIME radio telescope, British Columbia; representative discovery-network pinFirst archival discovery published 2007; magnetar association in 2020

Folklore & Legends

The Banshee: Ireland’s Supernatural Death Messenger

The banshee is a documented and diverse body of folklore. Recorded experiences establish belief and narrative practice, not a supernatural prediction, while coincidence and memory help attach cries to later deaths.

folklorepublicIreland; representative Galway pinMedieval literary roots; extensive nineteenth- and twentieth-century collection

Scientific Anomalies & Natural Phenomena

The Pioneer Anomaly: When Spacecraft Heat Looked Like New Physics

The anomaly was a real navigation residual, not an invented effect. Uneven radiation of onboard heat matched its magnitude and evolution, leaving no statistically significant anomalous acceleration.

explainedpublicJPL, Pasadena, where the anomaly was analysed; representative pinMissions launched 1972–1973; anomaly published 1998; thermal resolution 2012

Folklore & Legends

Selkies: Seal People, Stolen Skins and Stories of Return

Selkie stories are living folklore rather than zoological reports. Their variants preserve island relationships with seals and the sea, while modern retellings increasingly examine consent in the stolen-skin marriage plot.

folklorepublicOrkney and Shetland; representative northern isles pinDocumented in nineteenth-century print and twentieth-century oral recordings

Cryptids & Animal Reports

The Okapi: A Known Animal Reintroduced to Western Science

Skin, skull and later living observations established the okapi as a giraffid. The evidence was gathered through Indigenous expertise within a colonial system that long credited outsiders more than local knowledge.

explainedpublicIturi Forest; representative Okapi Wildlife Reserve pinFormal zoological description in 1901; Indigenous knowledge long predates it

UFOs & Aerial Phenomena

Japan Air Lines 1628: Lights, Radar and Scale Over Alaska

The crew’s visual report was real and professionally documented. Radar returns were intermittent and disputed, while darkness, cloud and uncertain distance made size estimates especially fragile.

Archaeology & Disputed Artefacts

Nan Madol: Engineering a Ceremonial City on the Reef

Nan Madol remains archaeologically challenging, but its builders and broad chronology are not unknowable. Local oral histories, settlement evidence and scientific dating converge on Pohnpeian construction and Saudeleur power.

explainedpublicTemwen Island reef, PohnpeiIslet construction from the first millennium CE; monumental phase about 1200–1500 CE
